The name is where we begin. The meaning of the name
Liberty and belonging.
Both held in the name Beit Deror.
Liberty
Our name draws on the biblical proclamation of liberty: in the jubilee of Leviticus, and in the message of release in Isaiah.
Belonging
It also recalls the swallow in Psalm 84, finding a nesting place near the altars of God. An image of home, nearness, and belonging.
Our purpose
Why Beit Deror exists,
in one sentence.
We exist to proclaim liberty and restore whole persons, spirit, mind, and body, to the image of God.
Isaiah 61:1 Luke 2:52 Genesis 1:27 Romans 8:29We follow the pattern of Messiah, who “increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man,” and the charge He read aloud: to bind up the brokenhearted and proclaim liberty to the captives.
Luke 2:52 Luke 4:18 Isaiah 61:1Our ethos
We will not cover
what God intends to heal.
Lay not a bandage upon that which requireth the balm of Gilead.
An original motto, echoing Jeremiah—not a Scripture quotation.
Jeremiah 8:22A bandage hides a wound so everyone can feel finished. Balm reaches the wound so it can be made whole. We choose the slower, costlier work of restoration over the quick comfort of looking fine.
The prophets of Jeremiah’s day “healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.” Eleven verses later the prophet asks, “Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there?” The remedy existed. The people settled for less.
Jeremiah 8:11 Jeremiah 8:22The Hebrew word for balm, tsori, is a resin drawn by cutting the tree. Healing flows through a wound: “with his stripes we are healed.”
Our one question
Are we trying to make this stop hurting, or trying to make it whole?
When a life is in danger, stopping the bleeding is not a bandage; it is the first act of healing. In any crisis we secure safety first, then stay for the long road of restoration.

Head
We enter through the door, under the Head, fastened to the Head. Liberty is not found in having no head. It is found in being joined to the right one.
The dot in our name is that peg: it joins the house to liberty.
A devotional reflection on the letters. The word’s meaning comes from how Scripture uses it: the Jubilee release, and the swallow that finds a nest at God’s altar.

Where we begin
The work closest to our hearts is suicide prevention and walking with families after a suicide loss. These wounds deserve more than a bandage. They deserve presence, patience, and the long road of healing.
